Apple designs more of its own chips than any company alive, and on Monday it re-signed the company that secretly helps build everyone else's AI chips through 2031

Even Apple can't build chips alone

THE OPERATIVE PHRASE, in a filing the chipmaker Broadcom sent to regulators on Monday, was "custom ASIC silicon products." Broadcom is not a household name, but it makes a great deal of the invisible hardware tucked inside the devices and data centers that are. On Monday it extended its long-running supply deal with Apple through 2031: a supplier keeping a big customer, a few wireless parts locked in, Broadcom's shares up around 5%. Apple has bought these components from Broadcom for the better part of a decade, and until recently the arrangement looked fragile, since Apple has been replacing outside chips with its own, the way it dropped Qualcomm's modems for homemade ones.

The phrase in the filing changes what the deal is. The parts Broadcom has long sold Apple are the little radios that let an iPhone find a cell tower or connect a pair of headphones. "Custom ASIC silicon products" means something else: chips designed from scratch for a single job, which in 2026 almost always means artificial intelligence. Wedbush, a Wall Street research firm, read the language to "suggest AVGO will be assisting with more compute oriented products," which is analyst-speak for "this is about AI now." Apple is building exactly such a chip, codenamed Baltra, to run the cloud behind its Apple Intelligence features. Selling Apple parts is one business. Helping design Apple's brain is another.

Broadcom already runs that business for nearly everyone else. The biggest technology companies have spent the past few years racing to design their own AI chips, and the reason is a single company: Nvidia, whose processors power most of the world's AI and have been so scarce that buyers wait months in line and pay dearly once they reach the front. Getting out of that line is the industry's shared obsession. So Google built its own AI chip, Meta built one, and OpenAI and Anthropic are building theirs. None of them did it alone. They hired Broadcom.

Google has designed seven generations of its in-house AI chip with Broadcom since 2014. Meta is doing the same. OpenAI signed a deal with Broadcom last October that analysts value north of $100 billion, and Anthropic's chips run through the same pipeline. Each project was announced as a kind of declaration of independence from Nvidia; each was built on Broadcom's engineering. These companies do not, in any literal sense, build their own AI chips. They hire the one firm that builds nearly everyone's, and put their name on the result.

The business is enormous and mostly invisible. Broadcom's AI-chip revenue reached roughly $20 billion last fiscal year, up 65%, and its chief executive, Hock Tan, expects it to pass $100 billion a year by 2027. The technology giants fighting hardest with one another are, a layer beneath the surface, all paying the same supplier. This week Apple joined them.

Apple is the case that clinches it. No company on earth makes more of its own chips: the processors in every iPhone and Mac, the modems it built specifically to stop paying Qualcomm, nearly all of it. If any company could design a custom AI chip with no outside help, it is Apple. And even Apple reaches for Broadcom, on a contract that now runs six years out. Apple already provides about a fifth of Broadcom's revenue; Monday's deal deepens a reliance that was supposed to be shrinking.

The dull supplier renewal is really a story about where power sits in the AI economy. The giants escaped Nvidia's chokehold, more or less, and escaped into a dependence on Broadcom, a company most of their own customers could not pick out of a lineup, now standing at the exit exactly as Nvidia stands at the entrance, taking its cut coming and going. Apple spent a decade proving it could build almost anything itself. This week it signed, through 2031, for the one thing it cannot.
